Everything you need to know for your first class

What to Bring

R

A Yoga Mat

If you have one.  If not you can rent one at the studio for two dollars, or buy one.  We carry WAYmats as well as Manduka yoga mats that have a lifetime warranty.

R

A Big Towel

Only necessary for hot classes, like a bath towel or a beach towel.  You put it on your mat to sweat on so you don’t slip.  We rent towels for $2, and we also sell towels designed to cover yoga mats.

R

Water

For hot classes bring a full water bottle.  You can buy water at the studio if you need to.  Try to be well hydrated when you show up.

How to Prepare

9

Don't Eat Right Before Class

You want to avoid eating anything heavy for a couple hours before class. You may be holding yoga poses while lying on your stomach for a portion of the class.

9

But Don't Starve Yourself Either

Unless you are taking a class right after waking up in the morning, you need to make sure you eat well during the day to give your body the energy it needs to make it through class.

9

Drink Water

Especially for hot classes.  You want to be well hydrated when the class starts.  You’re going to be sweating, so if you start the class already dehydrated you won’t be able to catch up.

What to Expect

Hot Classes:

E

It Will be Hot and Humid

Holding yoga poses in a heated room is challenging, especially in the beginning.  You’ll be encouraged to sit down and take breaks as you need to.  After a few classes your body will get used to the heat and things become much more comfortable.

E

You Will Sweat

You should wear clothes that you’d be comfortable wearing to exercise outside on a hot summer day.  Don’t worry about this too much for your first class, just don’t show up wearing sweatpants and a sweatshirt and you’ll be fine.

All Classes:

E

You Will Feel Great Afterwards

The great thing about yoga is that you will get tremendous benefits from the poses no matter how deep you can go or how much you can do.  Even if you don’t think you’ve done much, your body will benefit from the class on many levels.

E

You Will be Challenged

The great thing about yoga is that you will get tremendous benefits from the poses no matter how deep you can go or how much you can do.  Even if you don’t think you’ve done much, your body will benefit from the class on many levels.

E

You Will be Humbled

Don’t be surprised if the yoga kicks your butt, no matter how physically fit you are.  Building strength and flexibility at the same time is a long term process.  For hot classes, the combination of the heat and the specific sequence of postures makes for a humbling physical workout.  Yin classes are slow paced, but move deep into connective tissue.

E

You Will be Welcomed

Our teachers and students love yoga and they love it when new people come to try it. In fact, they’re always dragging their friends and family in to class to show them how great it is! We feel like the world would be a better place if everyone could enjoy the peace, calm, and health that comes with a regular yoga practice, so our entire community is always welcoming of new students.
